things to do

  1. Tour the Colosseum - Has to be done if you go to Rome. TOP TIP - get yourself a wee tour guide, don’t just stroll around alone, otherwise you’ll be looking at a massive old ruin wondering where Joaquin and his thumb would be. Instead you’ll get to know where they kept Russell and know why there’s tunnels, doors, various halls etc. Makes a big difference, also if you don’t get the above references…watch Gladiator!

  2. Visit St Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel - Just ridiculous architecture, stunning interiors and when you get to the top of the basilica the view is amazing (see pictures at bottom)

  3. Visit the Pantheon - Possibly my favourite thing in Rome. You’re strolling through little cobbled back streets then WHAM, huge building from nowhere (see picture). Then you go inside and its a stunning circular building, made to perfection except there’s a big bloody hole in the roof! It’s ok though because someone made a drain in the middle of the floor. We were there when it rained and it was cool, so in fairness i’m quite glad Bob the Builder didn’t finish the roof.

  4. Go to Trevi Fountain - One of the most stunning fountains in the world. Bring a coin so you can make a wish, you won’t get it back though, so if you’re saving for a big occasion make sure and leave those 2 euros at home!

  5. Get your steps in! - Spanish steps that is. Walk up 135 beautifully crafted steps to overlook Rome! Not far from Trevi fountain.

  6. Have a peroni in Piazza Navona - Once you’ve done all the above you’ll need a breather and why not do it in this big beauty of a square! Fountains, restaurants and bars galore!

food

Trattoria da Luigi! was a restaurant suggested by a local we met and what a lovely authentic Italian it was. No crazy tourist prices you got at some of the more touristy locations and even better grub. Thats me in the picture there with a classic pasta dish and a classic italian pint!

ALSO if you fancy it, go PROPER Roman - meat, potatoes and bread. We tried it at the lovely restaurant, Da Bucatino, another wee local recommendation. Really tasty!

hotel

Relais Giulia where we stayed is such a lovely wee boutique hotel for those romancers out there who fancy a weekend away! Great value, close to all the sights and lovely rooms (see picture). We even had a little balcony to sit out on in the evening, a wee Moretti in hand 🍻😊, admittedly it was December so swiftly moved on to hot choccie!
