things to do
Black Water Rafting - Ok not technically Auckland, but jump in a car to Waitomo and you’ll not regret it. Head 80-metres below ground, raft in tubes through underground rapids, jump off waterfalls and float below a sky of glow worms, all whilst exploring one of New Zealand’s most diverse cave systems (see picture). Absolutely superb fun and my favourite thing I did in New Zealand.
Rotorua - Jump in a car again and visit this wee natural beauty! Great fun place to check out bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and natural hot springs, as well as the fascinating Māori culture (see pictures at the bottom). Also head just outside Rotorua to swim in hot pools and waterfalls.
Waiheke Island - One for the wino’s! Grab a ferry from Auckland and head across to the island. Jump on an electric bike and visit the many world famous vineyards, sampling the finest wines then try and ride your bike back to the ferry pissed! Lovely remote beaches too (see picture at bottom) and you can get a pint if wine isn’t your thing.
Sky Tower - See the whole of Auckland and the mountains in the distance from this huge tower in central Auckland (see pictures at bottom). If you’re brave enough stand on the glass at the top and see the city over 180m below you. Then after grab a drink and a bite to eat whilst enjoying the view.
Last couple of things…for fun, beers and shuffleboard! Head down to the waterfront, loads of bars. AND for all of you Lord of the Rings fans, of course, Hobbiton you can drive to from Auckland. Not my cup of tea but meant to be amazing!
food
Elliott Stables - As far as i’m concerned this is the perfect food place! A load of top restaurants, not too expensive, surrounding a big square of tables and seats…so you and your friends can order from wherever you want and eat together. I can have the Beef Wellington, Agnes can have the Sushi and Walter can have the Cajun Chicken. WINNER!
There’s also loads of good eateries down at the waterfront so head down and grab what tickles your fancy…THEN party till the early hours. A personal favourite of mine was Dr Rudi’s for its rooftop bar and then Danny Doolan’s for some late night drinks and tunes!
