top things to do
The Initiation Well (see picture) - My favourite thing to do (outside eat and have a pint) in Sintra was this huge 88-foot-deep well. You pop your head in a tiny entrance and all of a sudden you see the this huge well. You walk all the way down then come out through an underground network of caves. It is located on the land of Quinta da Regaleira and is a wee walk from the historic city centre.
Park and National Palace of Pena - The palace (see top picture) is quite a sight, like some Disney palace! Only checked it out a wee bit though, from a section at the front, as the queues to go in were loooooong! So either go mid week or very early, unless you love a queue then go midday Saturday and live your best life 😀👍. The park has some quirky turrets in lakes etc. (see below) and loads of stunning scenery, but it’s hilly walking!
Castelos dos Mouros - Didn’t have time to do this, but check out the great wall of Portugal here.
NOTE for SINTRA -Bring comfy shoes as you’ll be walking ALOT. The parks are big and the castles are far apart. We did however grab a TukTuk (see bottom) from Pena Park to Quinta da Regaleira for only 10 euros, we also grabbed an Uber from the train station to Palace of Pena, only 7 euros.
food
Dona Maria was our restaurant of choice in Sintra as it had a cracking view. I sat looking over the historic centre whilst having a burger and a pint. However if you are more cultured than a heathen like me, try the local special fish (see picture) i was told it was very nice indeed!
